Purple Hairstreaks Encore!

After the good fortune of 2 years ago, I went looking for Purple Hairstreaks on Beverley Westwood. I saw at least 3 individuals despite the rather windy conditions, and the hullabaloo of a race meeting just across the road! Here's the original post

Not Scarborough

On Wednesday last week we didn't go to Scarborough, but went to our standby location, North Cave Wetlands, as Wheldrake wasn't quite the place to go after a lot of rain.  The morning started well with a Green Woodpecker 'laughing' in the large Ash tree on Dryham Lane.  We didn't get particularly close, but a humble bridge camera shows it throwing its head back to laugh! Almost Daily Cuckoos, but Others Still Missing

On Tuesday the weather was so good we were able to visit some private lakes near Burstwick.  The Cuckoo showed very well for Saturday's recce, but was only heard during Tuesday's visit.  Some summer visitors were still missing, but highlights included 3 Herons on nests, some Sand Martins, and a smattering of Warblers. There seemed to be a lot of summer visitors noticeable by their absence... Week 5

On Tuesday I left my camera on the dining room table, so I didn't get a photo of the Turtle Dove sat right next to us.  In all we had 3 or 4 of those, but also:   Garden Warbler, Willow, Reed, & Sedge Warblers, Long-tailed Tit, Cuckoo, Buzzard, Heron, Blackcap, Song Thrush, etc. All photos are mine unless stated otherwise Hobby On Wednesday we got a little hot under the collar at Welton Waters.  Both groups had a Lesser Whitethroat in the car park, but there's no doubt the highlight was the last minute Grass Snake.  Birds seen included:  Kingfisher, Yellow Wagtail, Yellowhammer, Lesser & Common Whitethroat, Cetti's Warbler (h), Reed & Sedge Warbler, Chiffchaff, Shelduck, Tufted Duck, Reed Bunting, Linnet, Goldfinch, Greenfinch.
